Issue 36, November 2023
Dear Fellow Bondodontists,
We have not held a Yosemite seminar since 2022. The guest speaker was Prof. Eddie Lynch and as expected, his presentation was sensational. We immediately arranged a follow-up seminar in Schull, Ireland for April 2023 which was a great success too. (Attendance came from as far as Australia!)
This year, Yosemite was not available to us due to the Ahwahnee Hotel remodeling. We have asked for space in October 2024 which might happen. Meanwhile we shifted to the “new Yosemite” venue, Schull in County Cork, Ireland. This is a great destination.
Ireland is a long distance from Yosemite. However for many of us, especially those living in the Eastern USA or Canada, attending our Yosemite seminar and staying in the Ahwahnee Hotel actually costs more than flying to Ireland, staying at our discounted prime hotel, eating well and drinking well. It is a great family destination. In harmony, we made the tuition very affordable. The 2024 Ireland seminar information is listed under Seminars at the bottom of our home page.
Bulkfills Update
In Issue 34, polymerization shrinkage was discussed. The upshot is that Bulk EZ solves all of the shrinkage and gap issues. It is unique. The key question has been: Does Bulk EZ, all by itself, that is not capped with another composite, have sufficient wear resistance? The answer is mixed. Initially it appeared to be fine but lately there are some reports of excessive wear on some molars. So now I am recommending the new Bulk EZ Plus for potential wear situations. This version contains some zirconia filler (the filler that we developed for Z Nano).
Dr. Mike Nelson, the most experienced Bulk EZ user I know, offered the following comments:
Chameleon: EZ > EZ Plus
Wear Resistance: EZ Plus >>> EZ
Margins: same, better than anything else on the market!
Confidence: Directed shrinkage is the only way to go. I trust EZ Plus and use it on all my bonded restorations.
Silver Diamine Fluoride
The original SDF product, Saforide, has been sold in Japan since 1970. It works very well (even on me!) but it turns arrested caries black. Obviously this color change limits its use in esthetic zones. After Dr. Graham Craig’s initial studies, Dr. Geoff Knight and his recent PhD studies resulted in a product, Riva Star from SDI in Australia. The potassium iodide converts the SDF into white silver iodide and provides even better cariostatic action. This is a game changer and is part of all of my current seminars.
Geoff was scheduled to speak at Yosemite in 2024 but the ridiculously high airfares from Australia and Ahwahnee costs make this plan prohibitive. So here is a great bargain way to learn all about it. I very highly recommend this book.
